Whyalla Carnival 2010!

This weekend the Whyalla Stealer's host their own basketball Carnival. Teams from around the state will be in town to fight it out, with what is arguably the best basketball carnival held outside of Adelaide. Teams from Broken Hill, Yorke Valley, Pt Pirie, Pt Augusta, Pt Lincoln, Roxby Downs and Strathalbyn will converge on the Whyalla basketball stadium to fight it out for the rights to being the best teams in the region. With the South Australian country championships only 3 weeks after, this also serves as an excellent build up for the teams.

This also serves as the first carnival for the athletes who made the South Australian Country State side and have just come back from Pt Macquarie and Albury, it is also an excellent time for them all to show their skill against what would have been once team mates. There will be over 60 state representative players in the town to play for their association so the action will be high. Not only are the state athletes showing their best, but also our very own Michael “Showtime” Quinn who coached in Albury. It will be a great chance for Whyalla’s public to see the theatrics that have made Showtime exactly that, Showtime.

With so many teams converging here, all three courts at the stadium will be used from 8 to late on Saturday and so will the Recreation centre’s two courts, along with the Stuart High school gym. The action will pick up again on Sunday morning from 8 again, with the finals commencing around lunchtime.

With weather conditions looking cooler than in the past, you can expect to see some of the hottest action on the court. Local players such as Chad McLean, Ben Sawford and Adam Nicoll will look to fire up in the 18 men after coming close in the last carnival against Pt Pirie. The under 18 women’s will also be hot on the court with the Whyalla V Pt Augusta game always one to watch.

The under 12’s action is always great to watch, with all association’s up and coming players full of enthusiasm and playing with their all. Some of those games in the past have been the best of the carnival. Whyalla is lucky to have a couple of player who will live up the hype in Kody Rosalia, Tom Fischer, Josh Quinn and Aaron Rogers in the boys and Tia Bails, Nellie Cowan and Kelsey Mitchell in the girls.

With all this action come hunger and the WBA have that covered too with a bacon and egg rolls being cooked at the stadium in the morning of both days and full counter meals available at the stadium throughout the day, as well as a BBQ being cooked Saturday night for tea, and with prices are still set in the 90’s you can afford to bring the whole family out to enjoy the action, and with the bar fully stocked, there’s always a beer on hand for the responsible person.

So if this weekend is a little quiet, and with nothing on the box, head out the Jubilee Park and grab some of the hottest action to be seen in Whyalla for a long time.

This Carnival also will be in the introduction of Tegan Curwood as coach. Teagan will be the coach of the Under 14 boys, taking over from Peter 'Man of' Steel.
Tegan has been a long time player for Whyalla, and has recently spent time in America playing for S.A. Country. To say she has a wealth of knowledge is an understatement. Tegan is keen to win, and also develop the players to the best of their ability, which is exactly what we want from our young charges..

Apart from being waaaay better looking than 'Man of' Steel, Tegan will bring some keen enthusiasm to these young men. We wish her all the best and hope she will be as good a coach as her sister.
